Tourism Impacts on the authentic culture

Positive impacts

Strengthening Communities

Due to tourism, the discrimination against the Ainu people has decreased in Japan. Tourism had strengthened their relationship in the area and as there are active involvements in tourism it has resulted in numerous changes for them in terms of economically, socially and culturally. This paper goes to show that tourism in the Ainu culture are the representatives of Ainu in the Japanese society.

Facilities developed for tourism for the Ainu

Facilities are built for tourism to enhance the Ainu culture so that when tourists come, they will have a better experience. This in turn allow the Ainu people to enjoy better facilities and living condition compared to the past.

Encourages Civic Involvement and pride

Due to tourism, it raises local awareness of the financial value of the Ainu cultural sites and stimulates the feeling of pride.

Negative Impacts

Change and loss of indigenous identity and values

Certain Ainu Traditional ceremonies are performed just to entertain/show the tourists when they are suppose to be held only when there are important events. Also, the ceremonies/traditions may be modifies due to the adaption of the tourist demands.

Physical Influences causing social stress:

Some tourists may be very inconsiderate and vandalise, litter or perform illegal removal of the Ainu cultural items.
